Lily graduated from high school with a 3.99, a CNA license, a year’s experience working in a medical office, and a resume including student ambassador and community services club—a set of credentials not good enough to get into half the schools she applied to. This says so much about how wild college admissions have gotten. But the school she fell in love with, Pace, did accept her and that’s where she is now. She loves being in NYC and has been doing all the real freshman learning: discovering that budgeting matters, finding that your first friends may not be the friends you keep, and sometimes you just need to set boundaries. She’s working hard and it’s been cool to see her maturity (and drive). The empty nest is a weird phenomenon at first. The house was so clean and quiet and the rhythm of life was decidedly off. But I have to admit, I settled in pretty quickly to not chasing around picking up spare socks, multiple water glasses, food wrappers, etc, and it’s kind of nice to know that if I wipe down the counters, they might stay that way a moment or two. (Having my kid in college only four hours away by train also means I can get a Lily fix easily enough if I need.)
